Mental Health Awareness Week: Dolia Creations

Mental Health Awareness Week: Dolia Creations

It's Mental Health Awareness week and the theme this year is kindness.

Whilst mental health is important all year round, this week helps to raise awareness of the fact that kindness matters. This week is poignant in the current situation as government restrictions are starting to lift and people are worried about what will happen next.

More and more people have been doing acts of kindness during the lockdown, with friends and family delivering food and gifts for one another and people supporting elderly neighbours however they can. These acts are especially important for those who are struggling with their mental health or feel lonely and isolated.

As our act of kindness this week, we have all spent time creating something (whether that's cakes, a painting or crafting project) to give away to our friends and family. This should help to brighten their day and give them a reason to smile. We have also donated £5 each to a mental health charity of our choice. Around half of us donated to Mind, and the other half to Young Minds, which are both great charities that help adults and young people with mental health issues.

Take a look at our creations below!

Marshmallow Cake Pops

Laura Dolia MHAW

I helped my son make some Marshmallow cake pops yesterday. We made them for Grandad. It is his birthday today and he usually spends every birthday in his favourite place in Cornwall but obviously can't go this year, so we've made these to cheer him up.

Joe Dolia Creation

I’ve never painted a picture before, but my late Granddad was an exceptional painter so I thought I’d give it a shot… let’s just say it’s not quite up to his standards. My Nanny is sadly alone at the moment due to coronavirus lockdown rules and isn’t as happy as she usually is, so I thought giving her this painting would give her a bit of a laugh!

Hannah Dolia Creation

As my 'act of kindness' I decided to make some brownies for my family and grandparents! Who doesn't love something chocolatey to cheer yourself up?!

Button Art

Emily Dolia Creation

I decided to make some button art for my mum since she likes crafts and flowers. I added 'Kindness matters' at the bottom as a little reminder that her kind deeds make a difference. The Scrabble letters will also remind her of all the times we have played Scrabble together!

Lemon Drizzle Cupcakes

Jess Dolia Creation

Here is a basket of lemon drizzle cupcakes I made for my Nan. I always used to make lemon drizzle cakes with her when I was younger and so these offer her a small reminder of those memories to make her smile.

Tomato & Cucumber Plants

Matt Dolia Creation

The photo is of tomato and cucumber plants that I grew from seed. This week, I have given away plants to my family so that they can enjoy fresh tomatoes and cucumbers in the summer too.

Alice Dolia Creation

I have made some cupcakes and they are for my friend and his family to enjoy as a treat.

Why don't you join us in making a gift for a loved one or someone you know who is struggling with their mental health? We'd love to see your creations.
