#happyheads: Normalising Mental Health in the Workplace

We’re excited to share something with you that we’ve been working on for a few months now… our new mental health campaign, Happy Heads (#happyheads). The campaign focuses on normalising mental health in the workplace and creating an environment where people are able to talk about their struggles.

The key aims of our campaign are:

  • To support and improve the Dolia team’s mental health
  • To raise awareness of the importance of mental health and normalise the discussion of it in the workplace
  • To support and raise money for mental health charities (such as Mind, YoungMinds and Barnardo’s)

Starting small, we’ve been doing a few things to help improve our mental health at work, but we have bigger plans in the pipeline. Here’s a sneak peek of what we’ve been doing at the office...

Question of the Day

Dolia question of the day

The question on the board here is 'What makes you happy?'. We also use the blackboard to keep track of scores for our weekly quiz and Uno games.

Whenever we can, we try to answer a “question of the day” to provide a short break from thinking about work. It’s a fun way of breaking up the day and giving us something to think about to take our minds off our worries.

The questions can range from something trivial like, ‘What’s your favourite fruit or vegetable?’, to more difficult questions like, ‘If your life was a movie, what would the title be?’. We’re still thinking about that last one…

Wednesday Walk

Dolia Wednesday Walk

Every Wednesday, we go on a walk around the beautiful countryside of Farleigh Wallop, where the Dolia office is located. We’re lucky to be in a rural area which has plenty of fields and footpaths within our reach that we can wander and explore.

The Walk provides an important break from work, helping to reduce stress and stop us becoming overwhelmed by all the tasks we need to do. In addition to this, the Wednesday Walk provides an opportunity for us to bond as a team, chatting and getting to know each other better.

Personally, when arriving back from walks, I have found that I have had a clearer mind, and this has helped me to be more productive for the rest of the day.

Board Games

Another way that we take our minds off work during breaks is to play board games together. Not only are they fun and sometimes challenging, they encourage us to switch off our technology, instead of having our eyes glued to the screen all day.

We’ve got a game of Monopoly going on at the moment that could take a while to finish, and we have played a few quick games of Uno. On the rare occasion that the internet goes down and we are unable to do any work, the board games provide a good way to pass the time…

Weekly Quiz

Dolia Weekly Quiz

Each Friday, the Cats take on the GTIs in the Dolia Weekly Quiz! We answer questions on a range of subjects, from Films and Celebrities to Science and Geography. Currently, the score is 7-5 to the Cats (go Cool Cats!).

The quizzes don’t take long, but we can get quite competitive. This helps to shift the focus from any worries or negative thoughts we may have onto something different. Not only is the Weekly Quiz good for our mental health, it’s also just an enjoyable way to spend a Friday afternoon.

Fundraising

The Mind Walk

As well as working on improving mental health at Dolia, we're taking Happy Heads beyond the office and some of our team members are doing their own individual fundraising for mental health charities.

Jess will be doing the Mind Walk in London on the 4th April. This is a 10km walk along the North and South Banks of the Thames, raising money for the mental health charity, Mind. The aim of the walk is to raise awareness of mental health problems, and Mind say that "every donation represents a conversation about mental health that could make all the difference". The charity supports people who have Depression, Anxiety, or other mental health issues.

Joe is also planning to take on the Three Peaks challenge in the summer, and we're in the process of planning some fundraising events that we can do as a team.

Keep an eye on our blog and social media for more information on our mental health campaign over the next few months...
