Our Working from Home Experience

Our Working from Home Experience 2

The Dolia team have all been working from home for quite a while now, due to the current government advice regarding COVID-19. This has given us time to get to grips with remote working, so we thought we would share some of our experiences with you. In this blog, we all share what we've enjoyed the most about working from home and how we are keeping on top of work and our mental health.

What have you enjoyed the most about working from home?
Although a little ‘challenging’ at times (with a 3 and 5 year-old), it’s been great to spend more time with my family! It’s also been really useful as I’ve been able to spend a lot more time looking after the garden… even if it’s just a 10 minute prune or watering… I just have that extra little bit of time to keep on top of it. I guess the other thing is the levels of productivity… as we are not travelling to the office or any external meetings, it means that I can get a lot more done in a day… so, that’s another bonus!

What piece of technology have you used the most?
I guess my colleagues will be saying the same thing here… but, it has to be Microsoft Teams. It’s been a really useful platform to help us all work remotely and I think we’d be a little lost without it. Zoom has been great too which we are using more for external meetings.

What are you doing to maintain a work-life balance?
I’m trying to take a sensible break for lunch… although, this isn’t always the case as things have been a little manic over the last few weeks! Popping into the garden for quick breaks and checking in with the family has helped too.

How are you staying mentally healthy?
For me, it’s all about exercise. This really helps to keep my mind focused and refreshed and is a great way to ‘chill’ after a hard day’s work. I’ve been doing a lot of running and also started to do some more cycling. Going for ‘trundles’ with the family has also been a great way to ‘switch-off’ and get away from the screens/news/noise of the world. Keeping in touch with friends, family and colleagues has also been really valuable… I’ve had some fun evenings chatting with mates over a couple of beers which really helps to relax the mind and offers a glimpse of ‘normality’. Finally, gardening; we’ve been growing all sorts including tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, potatoes, carrots, sweetcorn and loads more; it’s actually quite therapeutic watching seeds grow and getting your hands into the soil.

What have you enjoyed the most about working from home?
I have loved being able to get up later in the morning and skipping the commute!

What piece of technology have you used the most?
I've used Microsoft Teams the most. It has been really useful for keeping in touch with colleagues via video/audio calls and messaging, and I generally get a faster response than with email.

What are you doing to maintain a work-life balance?
I go for daily walks either on breaks or in the evenings to clear my mind. Getting some fresh air, or even just going somewhere else in the house at lunch helps to break up the day, so I'm not constantly sitting at a desk.

How are you staying mentally healthy?
I’ve been writing down my tasks each day and prioritising them to avoid becoming overwhelmed by a long to-do list. I also look forward to playing games and doing quizzes online with friends and family in the evenings or on weekends, giving me motivation to keep going! It's both fun and good for my mental health.

What have you enjoyed the most about working from home?
Trying out different ways to keep focused! I’ve found that listening to podcasts or a good playlist helps me to keep up the concentration throughout the day.

What piece of technology have you used the most?
Microsoft Teams - it’s a really efficient way to check in on progress without having to send a long email. You can also use it for voice calls and video calls so it’s good for internal meetings and avoids you having to use another piece of technology.

What are you doing to maintain a work-life balance?
Making sure to sit away from my desk after I have finished working and not being tempted to stay there for the rest of the evening. Also helping with cooking dinner to make sure I do something different for the evening and stay away from technology!

How are you staying mentally healthy?
I’ve found it really helpful to get outside and go on a walk, run or just sit out in the garden. Even spending 15 minutes out the house helps to clear your head!

What have you enjoyed the most about working from home?
What I have enjoyed the most about working from home is not getting stuck in traffic whilst on my way to work.

What piece of technology have you used the most?
I have used Microsoft Teams the most as this is an easy way of communicating with work colleagues via audio call, video call or messenger. You can share you screen which can make explaining and briefing a lot easier than explaining it in an email.

What are you doing to maintain a work-life balance?
I am making sure that when I am not working I am not using technology as much so that my mind gets a complete rest from screens and I feel as though there is a break between work and home.

How are you staying mentally healthy?
In my spare time I make sure that I go out on long walks to clear my mind and get some fresh air. I am also enjoying listening to music and using my spare time to get some drawings done which can be very relaxing.

What have you enjoyed the most about working from home?
I have really enjoyed being able to spend more time around my family as we are all working from home together on similar timetables. They are great substitute colleagues for the time being!

What piece of technology have you used the most?
Microsoft Teams has been an essential part of my working from home toolkit, with the ability to instant message or video call any member of the team. It makes staying connected super simple.

What are you doing to maintain a work-life balance?
In the evening, I have recently been getting into baking. From triple chocolate chip cookies to banana bread, it’s an easy and fun way to get away from the screen whilst making great fuel for the next working day. I am definitely not at Great British Bake-Off standard yet, but my family don’t seem to be complaining!

How are you staying mentally healthy?
I have found continuing to exercise daily, whether that be walking my dog or going on a run, a great way to get some fresh air.

What have you enjoyed the most about working from home?
The best part about working from home is not having to commute; this means I get more time in the evenings/mornings and I'm saving money on fuel.

What piece of technology have you used the most?
I've used Microsoft Teams a lot to keep in touch with my clients and colleagues as it's a great way to instantly chat and share ideas.

What are you doing to maintain a work-life balance?
To maintain a work-life balance I have one room for working in which I don't use outside of working hours.

How are you staying mentally healthy?
Staying fit & healthy by going for a run or walk in the middle of the day and after work is a great way to keep my mind fresh and clear - I need to shed some of this quarantine weight gain! I'm also spending a lot of time designing the interior of my new house, this keeps my mind active in the evenings.

What have you enjoyed the most about working from home?
Seeing more of my son and husband.

What piece of technology have you used the most?
Microsoft Excel! I do spreadsheets in my sleep!

What are you doing to maintain a work-life balance?
We are trying to home school whilst both working full time so I have found it is easier to spend time helping my son during the mornings and focus on my work later in the day. However I keep track of hours and make sure I don’t work longer than I normally would. We always have family dinners together and always spend the weekends together. I am using the spare bedroom as my office so I can shut the door on it at night and feel like I have left work.

How are you staying mentally healthy?
We play in the garden together at ‘playtime’ and lunch breaks and always go for a long walk in the afternoon. I speak to my family every day and video call them once or twice a week. Although I miss everyone I have actually found weekends really relaxing as we’re not rushing about and can spend quality time together. Extra sleep helps too, no school runs/travelling time and early nights make a huge difference to coping with change.
