Ten For Ten

This September, Dolia is celebrating a very special birthday... it's now ten years old! I asked Dolia's Founder and Managing Director, Matt O'Byrne, ten questions for ten years of the company.

1. Why did you start Dolia?

I started Dolia because of the passion I have for website design along with an eagerness to learn more in an incredibly fast-paced industry. Starting a business was a big decision but the pressure of starting a new business drove me to work hard, learn new skills, meet new people and deliver ‘websites that work’.

2. What gave you the idea for the name ‘Dolia’?

Dolia is the name of my Italian Grandmother’s family. I started Dolia Design after a holiday in Italy and decided to go with the name for an Italian link. It often comes up in conversation as people are intrigued by the name. In 2015/16 we dropped the ‘Design’ from the company name and now go by just ‘Dolia’ which I felt was neater… plus, we don’t just do ‘Design’ anymore – business has evolved.

3. Who was your first client?

Ohh, good question. Actually my first client was before I even started Dolia – it was for JVC. Big company as a first client, I know! Somehow, thanks to my Dad’s connections I was commissioned to update and maintain the ‘JVC Mobile’ website which I really enjoyed and at just 16 years old… it was a cool job. My first client at Dolia was probably ‘Bindon Bottom’ which was a B&B that actually won the ‘Best B&B in the World’ twice over… thanks to their excellent website, I’d like to think!

4. How has the company grown over the last 10 years?

The company has grown in a number of ways… firstly staff… we are now a team of 6 plus we have a few great freelancers that we work closely with for more specialist services. We’ve also grown in terms of the services we offer… we’re not just a Website Design agency anymore (although, Web Design is still the back-bone of Dolia) but we now offer a range of Digital Marketing services to further enhance our clients online presence. I started Dolia in my living room 10 years ago and now we have a great office suite in the Countryside which is a great working environment for us that clients also love to visit. So, we’ve grown in many ways – it’s been great.

5. What is the best thing about working here?

No job is the same. We work with a range of clients from all sorts of industries and although the services we provide may be the same, the way in which we deliver them is always different as every client has a different requirement, so design and marketing strategies need to be carefully balanced depending on the industry, audience and company objectives. The other thing is learning! We learn something new every day as there is so much to learn in an ever-changing industry – it keeps us on our toes!

6. What is the most challenging thing about it?

A good question. I guess the most challenging thing is balance. Balance between workload, staff, projects, overheads… if the balance is right everything works very well. But, as a growing business we do have growing pains so sometimes that balance is jolted and it’s my job to understand how to re-balance when we need to. It’s not always easy but it’s all part of running a business.

7. Which website(s) or project(s) are you most proud of?

I’m proud of all the work my team do at Dolia… from small one-off jobs to large web projects. If I had to pick out a few projects they would include Hacker Kitchens UAE, ATP, Nomadic Knights and Ductwork Compliance. But, that’s just web… I’m also very proud of the great results the Digital Marketing team have and continue to achieve for our clients throughout a range of industries.

8. Is there anything you would do differently?

Sure, there are always things that you’d do differently but hindsight is a wonderful thing… I like to think that as a business, we grow stronger by making decisions and moving forward rather than standing still.

9. What have you gained from working at Dolia?

A real sense of achievement and something I can be really proud of. It’s been a great 10 years… I’ve worked with some exceptional people, interesting businesses and have had the pleasure of working with some incredibly hard working, passionate and brilliant individuals at Dolia.

10. What are your plans for the future of Dolia?

To get better at everything we do, to grow sustainably and to make our clients smile whilst making sure we’re all enjoying the work we do.

A big thank you from all of us here at Dolia to our clients, new or old, for their business over these ten years. We appreciate each and every one of you. Thank you for choosing Dolia!
